Headshots that reflect who you are

After you book, I will contact you to learn about your acting work and what you need from the session. I may ask whether these are your first professional headshots, where you plan to use them and whether you have an agent or any specific requirements.

We can also discuss the types of roles you are interested in, the photographs you already have and anything that concerns you about being photographed. If you have examples of headshots you like, you are welcome to share them.

I will also ask about clothing, available space and any access, mobility or sensory needs. You only need to share information that is relevant to the session. This conversation helps me plan headshots around you rather than using exactly the same approach for every actor.

You do not need to change your appearance or buy an entirely new wardrobe. Your headshots should reflect how you currently look, so your clothing, hair and makeup should feel natural and recognisable.

Choose several tops, shirts or jackets that fit well and do not distract from your face. Plain colours often work best, although this is not a fixed rule. Try to avoid large logos, very busy patterns and anything that feels more like a costume than something you would normally wear.

If you wear makeup, keep it close to your usual appearance. You may also want to prepare a few simple hair options if your hairstyle can be changed easily.

Because the session takes place at home, your clothes and mirror will be nearby. We can look through your options together and change anything that is not working. I will provide more personal guidance before the day.

Your actor headshot session will take place in your own home in St Albans or the surrounding Hertfordshire area. This gives you a private and familiar place to work without travelling to a studio.

Your home does not need to be large, spotless or beautifully decorated. I only need a small suitable area for the camera and lighting. Some professional headshots can be created in surprisingly small spaces, including corridors. The background seen in the finished photograph will be simple and carefully controlled.

Before the session, we will discuss the available space and decide what will work best. If your home is not suitable or you would prefer another setting, we can discuss an agreed local location.

At home, you have:

• Your own clothes and mirror nearby

• Familiar surroundings

• The option to play music

• Somewhere comfortable to sit

• The freedom to pause for a drink or short break

• The flexibility to change your outfit

• Personal items that may help you feel more settled

You do not need a large or beautifully decorated home. I can often create a simple, professional portrait using a small area, natural window light or a portable lighting setup. In fact, some of the photographs you have seen on this page were taken in a corridor.

I will not arrive and immediately start taking photographs. We will begin with a conversation about what you need, the types of roles you are considering and how the session will work.

We will look at your clothing choices, choose the most suitable area and set up the lighting. I will explain what I am doing, and you will have time to become familiar with the camera before we begin creating the main headshots.

The first photographs are part of the process. They allow us to test the lighting, make small adjustments and help you settle. As the session continues, we will explore different expressions, clothing choices and subtle changes in posture.

Yes. You do not need to arrive knowing how to pose for an actor headshot.

I will guide you through small changes to your shoulders, posture, head position, eye line and expression. The direction will be clear and manageable, and I will explain what I would like you to do.

An actor headshot should not look like a stiff formal portrait or an exaggerated character performance. The aim is to find natural positions that keep the attention on your face and allow your personality to come through.

I will also watch details such as untidy clothing, stray hair, reflections on glasses, tension in your posture and distracting backgrounds. Those are my responsibility, so you can concentrate on remaining present and responding naturally.

No. You do not need to smile in every photograph.

We will explore a range of natural expressions. This may include warm and approachable images, quieter expressions and more serious or thoughtful photographs. Small changes around the eyes and mouth can suggest different qualities without becoming exaggerated.

The purpose is not to create a collection of dramatic character faces. Your headshots should show useful range while still looking like the same person. A casting professional needs to recognise you, not wonder which version will arrive at the audition.

Yes. We will pause at suitable points and review some of the photographs together.

This allows you to see how your clothing, expression and posture appear on camera. You can tell me what feels right, raise any concerns and ask for a small change. We can then use what we have learned to strengthen the next set of images.

Reviewing the photographs can also remove some of the uncertainty. You may find that an angle or expression you were worried about looks much more natural than you expected.

You will not need to examine every frame. The aim is to keep you involved without interrupting the flow of the session.

That is completely normal. The first photographs are rarely the strongest because you are still becoming familiar with the camera, lighting and direction.

These early frames help us understand what works. We can adjust your clothing, background, lighting, camera angle, posture or expression. Sometimes one small change makes a significant difference. At other times, you simply need a little longer to settle.

The first photographs do not need to be selected or kept. I will not rush the session because we have not found the right headshot within the first few minutes.

Yes. You can pause whenever you need to.

You may want time to change clothing, check your hair or makeup, have a drink, review the photographs or simply step away from the camera for a few minutes.

Short breaks can help you reset and return with a more natural expression. If you become uncomfortable or need to stop completely, we will stop. A strong headshot will not come from pushing you beyond what feels manageable.

Yes. You are welcome to have someone you trust present during the session. This may be a partner, friend, family member or support person.

They can help you choose clothing, check small details or offer a second opinion. If you work with an agent, you may also want to discuss their guidance with me before the session.

Occasionally, having another person watching can make an actor more self-conscious. If this happens, we can ask them to step into another room for part of the session. You can also choose to have the session completely privately.

Yes. Please tell me if there is anything that would make the session more accessible or comfortable. You do not need to provide a diagnosis or justify what you need.

I can often adapt the session by communicating through email, providing written information beforehand, giving instructions one at a time, allowing extra time to settle or including regular breaks. We can work without music, reduce noise, avoid physical contact, create seated headshots or work around pain, fatigue and limited movement.

Because the session takes place in your home, we can work within a familiar environment. I cannot promise that every adjustment will be possible in every space, but I will listen, explain what I can offer and adapt wherever possible.

The main focus will be natural head-and-shoulders photographs suitable for casting profiles, agency applications, auditions, drama school applications, websites and other professional uses.

We can create closer and slightly wider crops, vary your clothing and explore different expressions. Small changes in posture, eye contact and lighting can help us show qualities such as warmth, confidence, seriousness, vulnerability or authority.

We will not rely on costumes, props or exaggerated character poses. Your range should come through subtle changes while every photograph remains honest and recognisably you.

The exact selection will depend on your experience, the roles you want to pursue and where the finished headshots will be used.

I will carefully edit the photographs you select. This includes correcting colour and lighting, removing temporary blemishes, tidying stray hairs and reducing minor distractions.

The editing will remain natural. I will not reshape your face, alter your features or remove every line and mark. Your headshots should look like the person who will arrive at an audition or walk into a rehearsal room.

If something concerns you, we can discuss it privately. The aim is to present you professionally without turning you into a polished stranger wearing your clothes.

You choose your final photographs.

After the session, you will receive a private online gallery where you can review the images in your own time. You can compare expressions, clothing and angles before selecting the photographs included with your session.

You may also want to ask your agent, acting tutor or someone you trust for their opinion. I can offer professional guidance if you find the decision difficult, but the final choice will remain yours.

Yes. Your headshots can remain private if that is what you want.

I will not publish them on my website, social media or promotional material without your clear permission. You can allow me to use specific photographs while keeping the rest of the session private.

Giving permission for one image does not give me permission to use every photograph. You remain in control of how your headshots are shared.

After you have selected your favourite headshots, I will carefully edit them and place the finished images in a private online gallery.

You will be able to view and download the headshots included with your session. You can then use them for Spotlight, casting profiles, agency applications, auditions, drama school applications, websites and professional promotion.

You can also share the private gallery with your agent, acting tutor or someone you trust if you would like help making your final choices.

Your photographs will not be posted online or used in my marketing without your clear permission. These are your actor headshots, and you remain in control of how they are shared.
