HEADSHOT OR PORTRAIT

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Many people, even photographers, often get a headshot and a portrait confused. So if that is you don’t panic, you are not alone.

In some cases the difference can be subtle so here is my version of the difference between a headshot and a portrait.

HEADSHOT OR PORTRAIT

HEADSHOT PHOTOGRAPHY

A headshot is used more by professionals and actors, etc. It is generally more work related and is often used on social media or a website as a profile photograph.

As the name describes, a headshot concentrates on the head and shoulders only. Headshots are also generally more formal than portraits (although more creative headshots are becoming more popular).

A headshot displays the person as they are so that people know who to expect when you meet face to face.

A headshot is also limited to one person per image.

HEADSHOT OR PORTRAIT

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

A portrait is for everyone. Business people, families, individuals, even your dog (or whatever pet you have) can have a portrait.

Similar to a headshot a portrait can be just the head and shoulders but can also include more of the body and the surroundings. They are also not restricted to just one individual making them ideal for families.

Portraits can also be more creative allowing for a more artistic look.
